Queen Victoria Market

We were told that having a full size refrigerator in our apartment was a plus - that often you will have a half size frig.  What a change from our life style in the states where we buy things in bulk, fill our freezer and waist so much food that gets lost in the back of the refrigerator and freezer.  We cook too much, overeat and then waste all that is left over.  When we were getting ready to leave we cleaned out our freezer - an experience like an archeological dig.  What a waste.

There is an abundance of fresh markets here, we have 2 close to where we live and are able to buy fresh things made from small local producers. It may be that things are very expensive here or it may be the life style but we seem much more in touch with what we are consuming and not wasting things as we did back home. A few days ago we went to Queen Victoria Market which is on the edge of the CBD in Melbourne. What an amazing experience. I have never seen a market of this size and breadth of products. This is not a toursit attraction as markets are in many places but a place where people actually shop for their groceries. I think we will make a weekly trip to Victoria Market for the experience if nothing else.

The sights and sounds were endless -each more intersting than the last.

The stalls with breads, cheese, sweets, antipasta etc.  were endless and each more tempting than the last.

They really do eat Kangaroo here.

I just love cherries - I'm in heaven, cherries in January.

More varieties of crabs and seafood than I've ever seen.

It's hard to find chicken here, and it's really expensive.  But Goat, Lamb, Kangaroo all are plentiful.

Bulk wine. Now that's an idea I can get used to.
