The Great Ocean Road

This past week we spent 3 days traveling The Great Ocean Road.  It is billed as one of the most spectacular drives in the world.  I have to say that may be understating it.  There is nothing witty or insightful to say - just an amazing adventure.  The pictures don't convey the overwhelming beauty and grandeur.  But it's the best I have:

Rocky coast line around Anglesea.  A little before this is Bell's beach home of one ot the top surfing competitions in the world.  This area is known as the surf coast.

The beach at Kennett River

The beach in the town of Lorne - the Pacific Hotel in the background

The beach in Apollo Bay

We stayed Chris's Beacon Point - outside Apollo Bay (at Skenes Creek) The villa was built hi up in the hillside.

This is the view from our balcony (above)

A beautiful restuarant is on the property with similar views and spectacular Greek food - dinner starts with a complimentary shot of ouzo.  Fortunately our villa was only a few steps from the restuarant.

The property around the villa had beautiful flowers, lime and lemon bushes, apple trees and fig trees (not quite ripe enough for me to eat unfortunately)

Apollo Bay is a comercial fishing village as well as a beach town.  Here they catch what they call Crayfish (or "Crays") which are actually what we would call a spiney lobster.

Along the road to Cape Otway we came across quite a few Koalas in the trees.  Just amazing to see them in the wild.

And of course the star of the show is the 12 Apostles.  Although there are only 7 remaining (the others have eroded apparently) the views are breathtaking.  I have to say that I have never seen anything like this.
